Sadly, the one element absent from almost all "self defense" courses is an element of realism. Even if the techniques practiced in class are "realistic" or "reality based," if one only praxtices in the classroom, dojo, etc. a very important element is lacking....a realistic ENVIORNMENT.
Training on this past Tuesday night, we decided to move out to the back parking lot for our White Collar Warrior Self Protection Skills class. The effect was immediate. Dim lights, cars, dumpsters, broken concrete, potholes and gravel...everyone could feel and sense a change in the ambience of the training. It was more gritty, more edgy, and a lot different than the well-lit, debris free confines of the school. that was EXACTLY what we needed.
The next time you train, take it to the parking lot. I guarantee you will feel a difference. Whenm you train in the school, your mind is focused on training, as it should be. Essential for mastering technique, but sub-par for grasping the reality of a self defense encounter. When you hear cars, see people having a smoke from the bar next door as they gawk at you training and smell pizza and steak from a nearby restaurnat, your senses get a bit overloaded...PRECISELY the enviornment you need to be trianin gin more often.
Switch times-practice in the day, at dusk and in the dark of night.
Switch drills, scenarios and enviornments and soon nothing will throw you off quite as much as it did when you started this type of training.
Check out our updated White Collar Warrior Self Protection Skills Home Study Course for a complete system of simple, direct, effircient and practical self defense skills and strategies that are designed for anyone, regardless of size, strength or ability level.
